Centre to launch Vigyan Jyoti Programme: Central Government is planning to launch ‘Vigyan Jyoti’ programme to promote STEM Education among girl students. As per media reports, following reports of poor gender diversity in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education, the Central Government is planning to launch  a unique Vigyan Jyoti Programme that aims to help girl students pick science and allied subjects for their academics in school and higher education level.

Vigyan Jyoti Programme to be launched this month

As per the formal media release, the central government is planning to launch Vigyan Jyoti programme by the end of the current month. The details regarding the Vigyan Jyoti programme were shared by Department of Science and Technology (DST) Scientist Sanjiv Mishra. As per the official media release, the government plans to pick 100 girl students from over 550 districts from 2020 to 2025 to pursue higher education in STEM and allied subjects. The girl students selected for the programme will be selected on the basis of their percentile score. The programme will cover girl students from grade 9 to 12.

Inculcate Interest, Fund Education

As part of the Vigyan Jyoti programme, the Central Government is planning to launch several initiatives that will help girl students inculcate the necessary interest in STEM subjects to inspire them to pursue higher studies. In addition to this, girl students who are part of Vigyan Jyoti programme will also be able to fund their education when admitted to any top institutes. As part of the programme, the Department will hold science camps for girl students in and around premier technology institutes such as IITs and NITs. Such science camps are expected to give a hands-on experience about the being on a campus of a premiere institute in terms of culture, motivation, interaction with scientists.

Data about Girl Students in STEM Education

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) shared important details and data about the poor participation of girl students in STEM Education and allied courses. According to the data shared, females comprised 24 per cent of the total pas-out students in STEM subjects in engineering, 22 per cent at the post graduate level, 28 per cent at M Phil and 35 per cent at the PhD level.
