Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IITI) to be setup soon as per New Education Policy draft

Central Government is planning to setup a national level institute dedicated to translation. As per media reports, a new Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IITI) will be developed by the Central Government in line with the recommendations of the draft New Education Policy (NEP). The expert panel led by former Indian Space Research Organisation chief K Kasturirangan has recommended setting up of a national-level translation and interpretation institute in the country as part of the new NEP draft.

To be Part of National Level Institute or University

Currently, the new National Education Policy draft is still under consideration, but the HRD ministry has initiated ground-level work for many the recommendations and proposals that are included in it. The NEP draft has recommended that an IITI should be established as a unit of one of the existing national-level institutions or a central university in collaboration with the states.

Institute to Address dearth of Translators

The recommendation to setup a national-level translation institute comes in the wake of severe dearth of quality translators and interpreters. In 2016, the Ministry of External Affairs had reported gross understaffing” in the interpreter cadre due to lack of quality translators and interpreters. The Union Cabinet convened a meeting in this regards asking the HRD Ministry and the Ministry of External Affairs to review the shortage of interpreters.

Growing Demand of Translators

The recommendation of new NEP panel also comes in the wake of rising demand of interpreters and translators who can increase in India’s global outreach. The demand of interpreters has shown steady rise in a number of sectors including e-commerce, medical tourism and others. In line with this, the committee felt the need for a national-level institute that takes care of developing qualified talent for the job market.

IITI to be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure

Furthermore, the New Education Policy draft has also recommended that the IITI that is being developed should have state-of-the-art infrastructure that can assist students and their training. The committee has recommended that institute should employ latest processes and adopt modern approaches to translations. Furthermore, the committee has also asked that the institute should have a multilingual panel of experts from across the country, who can plan a promotion strategy for Indian languages.
