Jamia Protests Spread Across India: Following police action against Jamia Millia Islaima University students on Sunday Evening, students on campuses across India have come out and protested, extending solidarity with the students of the varsity. As per media reports, Anti-CAA protests by JMI students turned violent on Sunday evening in South Delhi. In addition to this, news reports also indicated police resorting to use of force and action against Aligarh Muslim University students protesting against the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.
What triggered Police Action in Jamia Millia Islamia University?
As per media reports, students from Jamia Millia Islaima University were holding a peaceful protest against the passage of Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. However, soon after the start of the protest from campus, ‘outside’ elements mingled in with students and resorted to violence in the area near Jamia Nagar and New Friends Colony. Following this, police took action against the protesting students using ‘brute and excessive force’ against the protesting students. Following the crack-down against the JMI students, the police also entered the Jamia Milia Islamia University campus, without the permission of University administration. During the ‘raid’ on Jamia, police allegedly used brute force and beat-up students and even fired tear-gas shells in the University library. As per media reports, around 35 students were detained by police from JMI.
JNU, DU, Jamia Students Protest at Delhi Police Headquarters
Following the massive police action at JMI, students from JNU, Delhi University and Jamia gathered at Delhi Police Headquarters late evening protesting against the brutality and use of force against the protesting students. Students gathered demanded immediate release of the Jamia Students detained by Delhi Police after it entered the JMI campus. The Jamia students were released early morning on 16th December morning after a massive show of strength by students outside the Delhi Police Headquarters all through the night.
MANUU Students Protest in Hyderabad
With the news about Jamia Police Crackdown being highlighted in media, students from Hyderabad's Maulana Azad National Urdu University also joined the protests. As per reports, over 1000 students from the University launched a sit-in protest on premises of the University against the police action against Jamia Students. MANUU Students Union also wrote to the Controller of Exams of the University informing him of their decision to boycott the on-going exams on Monday as part of their protest.

TISS Students Boycott Classes
Students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai also boycotted classes on Monday, expressing their solidarity with students from Jamia Milia Islamia and the the police action against them. TISS students boycotted classes and field-work, which is part of their course, and launched a protest inside the premises of the campus. TISS students also marched from their college campus to the Ambedkar Garden in Chembur in protest against police action against Jamia students.
IIT Madras Students join Protests
In line with students from across the country, IIT Madras – one of the most renowned technological institutes of the country, also joined the protests against the police brutality against students from Jamia Millia Islamia. IIT Madras students protested against CAA and NRC and have expressed their solidarity with the students of AMU, DU and JMI.
IIT Bombay Students Hold March in-side Campus
Expressing solidarity with the students who faced police action in Delhi, students of the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) also organized a march inside the campus of tech-institute. Photographs of IIT Bombay students holding placards and flaming torches can be seen in photos circulated widely on social media platforms.
IISc Bengaluru Students join Protest
Students from IISc Bengaluru also joined the Anti-CAA protests and expressed solidarity with the Jamia Students who faced police ‘brutality’ on Sunday evening. IISc Bengaluru students organized a sit-in protest on campus.
Panjab University Students to Protest in Chandigarh
As per latest reports, students from Panjab Univerity will be holding a protest against police action against Jamia students today i.e. on 16th December 2019 at 5 PM. The students will also raise slogans against the CAA and NRC during the protests.
