Mumbai University has allowed all the colleges affiliated with the university in the city except the ones in Mumbai city and suburbs to reopen from today - February 16, 2021. The new circular has been issued two days after the university released the notification directing all the affiliated colleges in the city to postpone the reopening until February 22, 2021.
The decision to reopen the colleges was taken by the university after it received confirmation letters from collectors of Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane Rural, and other districts with colleges affiliated to Mumbai University. A spokesperson from Mumbai University while speaking to the media stated that colleges in Mumbai and the suburbs will have to wait for an official word from the local civic authorities before making a decision on reopening the institutions. The university spokesperson has however pointed out that the university has received official notification from collectors of the respective districts and has this given colleges in the said districts confirmation on reopening the college.
The Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister, Uday Samant earlier had announced that the colleges may reopen with only 50 percent of students allowed on the campus at a point in time. The department further announced that the state government will be issuing separate COVID-19 guidelines or Standard Operating Procedure for reopening the colleges and universities across the state.
