To make sure that children are not gender-biased while growing up, the National Council of Educational Research and Training said that Gender stereotyping must end at the pre-school level itself. The ministry of Human Resource Development’s curriculum developing body has made gender equality recommendations in the new guidelines for pre-school education.

The NCERT has asked the schools to make sure that the teachers demonstrate equal and appropriate expectations from both boys and girls by providing equal attention, respect, and opportunities to both. The NCERT also said that schools must select books, plays and other activities without any gender bias. Teachers, NCERT added should avoid language that limits one gender or another and use gender-neutral labels.

Officials of the NCERT also added that the teachers must use stories, songs, activities and facilitation aids which show girls and boys along with those children with special needs in the same roles as men and women in all the professions. The NCERT officials also said that both women and men must appear as leaders, heroes and problem solvers.

The NCERT has also recommended that parents are sensitized to support these gender-neutral practices at home, adding that it is important to help the parents understand and stop discrimination.

The proposed curriculum of the NCERT will follow Development Appropriate Practices appropriate to the age, stage, and context. The guidelines for the pre-schools given by the NCERT have also recommended for playschools to include children with disabilities through early intervention which will minimize learning difficulties and also accelerate the development of the children.

The NCERT recently released guidelines for pre-schools to avoid any kind of oral or written examinations for the students. The NCERT added that the practice of taking oral or written tests for pre-school children will affect them and is an undesirable practice that will further harm the children.
