NLSIU Bengaluru ReservationThe Karnataka State Assembly has passed a bill that reserves 25 percent seats in its National Law Schools of India University, Bengaluru for the local students. The National Law school of India University, Bengaluru also known as the NLSIU has 80 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate seats.

According to the bill passed in the state assembly, any aspirant who has studied in the state for 10 years will be eligible to apply for the 25 percent reservation for admissions to the law degree. At present all the seats are filled based on the rank secured by the candidates in the Common Law Admission Test also known as CLAT. CLAT examination is conducted for the admissions of candidates to the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered at the different NLU (National Law Universities) in the country.

The New Law - National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill 2020 once it becomes a law will replace the national Law School of India act, 1986. The bill which was passed by the Karnataka state Assembly has to pass the Legislative Council before it is presented to the State Governor for approval.

The opposition leaders, however, have questioned the government for replacing the term ‘Kannadiga Students’ with ‘Students of Karnataka’ in the bill which allows students from other states to benefit from the 25 percent reservation mentioned in the bill.

The opposition pointed out that the new legislation will rob the Kannadiga students who are born and brought up in the state.

Earlier in 2017, the previous government had announced a 50 percent reservation for the Karnataka Students in ]NLSIU Bengaluru which was however rejected by the Governor.

Most of the NLUs in the country provide reservations for local students. In January NLU Delhi introduced a reservation of 50 percent for the domicile students from the state for the BA LLB and LLM programmes offered by the NLU.
