Schools and Colleges Closed Again in India: Check State wise Status amid COVID Omicron Scare

India has been recording more Omicron COVID-19 cases in the last few weeks, several states including Diu, Nagpur, Telangana, Bihar, Pune, Bengaluru have decided to close the schools. Check the list of states with school closure update here.

Schools Closing Updates

Schools Closing Updates: With COVID-19 cases increasing across the country, many states have released guidelines and restrictions. Among the first step is the closure of schools, colleges and all other educational institutions. Many state governments including Telangana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Maharashtra (Pune), Chhattisgarh and Bihar announced today that schools will remain shut. Schools will be conducting online classes till further orders.

So far schools in Haryana, Delhi, Mumbai, Telangana, Jharkhand and Goa have been ordered to close. In the latest news, Bangalore schools have also been ordered shut. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 vaccination drive for 15 to18-year-olds children have also started. Children of this age group are eligible to get only Covaxin, the only one cleared for emergency use for children.

City and States-Wise List That Have Closed Schools

  • Chandigarh: The state administration has announced new curbs and restrictions to stop the spread of the pandemic. As part of these new measures, schools, colleges and all educational institutions in the Union Territory have been ordered to close. Schools and colleges will shift to online mode for now.

  • Telangana: The state schools will remain shut from 8th to 16th January as the Chief Minister of the state K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced holidays for all educational institutions during a review meeting.

  • Noida: Schools in Noida will be closed up to class 8th due to the increase in the number of cases of the new variant Omicron and severe cold waves. The government schools in Noida, Greater Noida, Hapur, and Ghaziabad have been shut for 15 days from 31st December to 14th January.
  • Nashik and Nagpur: Schools in Nashik, Maharashtra have been ordered shut from 10th to 31st January for classes 1 to 9 and 11. Learning activities will be shifted to online mode for all students, barring those in grades 10 and 12.
    So far schools in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Nagpur have been shut in Maharashtra due to rising cases. Maharashtra Minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced on Thursday as he warned about the rising cases

  • Diu: Officials in Diu have decided to shut down Anganwadi Centres, Pre-primary, Primary section classes from classes 1 to 8. The decision to shut down the classes was made following the rapid increase in the COVID cases. Although there is no official data on the number of students infected it is estimated that at least 200 students have been infected with the virus.

  • Maharashtra Colleges Universities: Apart from schools, the Maharashtra Government has decided to discontinue physical classes in colleges till 15th February amid the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the state. The state reported 653 patients infected with Omicron. Most of them are from Mumbai (408), followed by Pune (71).

  • Chhattisgarh: As per an announcement made by CM Bhupesh Baghel’s office, the schools will be closed in districts with a positivity rate above 4%. The order for closing schools will be applicable to Anganwadi Centres and Libraries as well.

  • Bihar: Keeping in mind the vaccination drive for children and the increasing cases, the state government has announced the closure of all the schools in the state till class 8. Offline classes will be permitted for students from classes 9 to 12 only.

  • Bengaluru: With COVID-19 cases increasing rapidly in the city, the Karnataka Government has decided to close down all educational institutions including schools and colleges with a few exceptions. All schools and colleges in the city will be closed for the next two weeks starting from 6th January 2022. However, students of classes 10th and 12th have been permitted to continue with their classes.

  • Uttar Pradesh: Schools in Uttar Pradesh have been closed. As per the restrictions imposed, schools in UP will be closed for all the students till class 10 and the same would come into effect from tomorrow - 6th till 14th January 2022. The decision to close the schools in the state was thought upon since many of the institutions were shut as winter vacations were underway.

  • Pune: Schools in Pune have been ordered to shut down for students of primary classes with immediate effect. The decision to close primary schools in Pune was taken at a high-level review meeting held on 4th January 2022. The decision will be applicable to Pune district including limits of municipal corporation Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad.

  • Jharkhand: The Schools, Colleges have been closed till 15th January 2022 to control the spread of COVID-19 infections. Jharkhand has imposed new restrictions in the state that are likely to be in place till 15th January unless mentioned otherwise.
  • Tamil Nadu: Schools have been closed again for classes 1 to 8 due to rising COVID-19 cases. TN schools have been closed for classes 1 to 8 till 10th January 2022 and guidelines have been revised for classes 9 to 12 and college students.
  • Punjab: The Schools and Colleges have been closed till 15th January 2022 as per the new lockdown-like guidelines announced. The government has imposed COVID curbs amid rising cases along with a night curfew. The announcement has been made after the government led by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi decided to have imposed mini lockdown-like curbs in the state.
  • Goa: The state government has decided to close down the schools and colleges in the state until January 26, 2022, amidst the rising COVID cases. It has been decided that offline sessions for students from classes 8 and 9 in schools will be closed until 26th January 2022.
  • Mumbai: Mumbai Municipal Corporation has ordered the closure of primary schools across the city to stop the spread of COVID-19 infection. Earlier, Primary and Upper Primary Schools for Class 1 to 8 students in the city were slated to reopen from 3rd January, however, it has been deferred until the month-end.
  • Rajasthan: The Primary and Upper Primary Schools in Jaipur have been closed by the Rajasthan State Government as part of the new restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19. For now, the state government has announced the closure of Primary Schools from 3rd to 9th January 2022.
  • Haryana: After recording a sharp increase in the Omicron cases, the state government released new restrictions, including the closure of schools and colleges. As per the notice, the state government has announced winter vacation in the schools till 12th January.
  • Odisha: School and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash stated, "Keeping in view the rise in the number of daily cases and based on the feedback provided by parents across the state, we have decided not to reopen schools for students of Classes 1 to 5 from January 3."
  • Delhi: Due to an increase in the Omicron case, the government has announced 'Yellow Alert'. Soon after, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) released new guidelines in which schools, colleges and other educational institutions had to be closed until further orders. Also, the government has announced winter vacations for classes 1 to 5.
