The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is ranked as the best university in India and 38th in Asia by the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2025, which was released on April 23, 2025. As well as Anna University, located in Chennai, ranked 111th in Asia, is not far behind.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore, which came in at number 131 on the worldwide rankings, Mahatma Gandhi University ranked at number 140, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences at number 146, and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences at number 149, are the next in line after Anna University.

The private universities were rated 161st in the world, above of the well-known Jamia Millia Islamia. IIT Guwahati and KIIT University came next. IIT Patna and NIT Rourkela came in second and third, respectively, with an overall ranking of 191 and 188 in the world, behind Aligarh Muslim University and UPES.
