The West Bengal Government on Friday has stated that the government is taking up the initiative to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia district and Kanyashree Colleges across the state. Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee had earlier laid the foundation stone of the new university at Krishnagar in Nadia district in January.

The chief minister on the occasion of International Girl Child Day stated that the government started the Kanyashree scheme in order to empower girls. The programme was allocated a budget of Rs. 7000 crore since its launch in 2013. The main objective of the Kanyashree scheme is to make sure that the girls stay in schools and also delay the marriages until the rightful age of 18.

The chief minister on her twitter account stated that the Kanyashree scheme won the UN Award in 2017. The scheme she added empowers girls from schools to the university level so that they can become independent women.

She also said that until now the Kanyashree scheme has empowered over 60 lakh girls and the government has also taken the initiative to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia and Kanyashree colleges in the different districts.

The Kanyashree Prakalpa works on improving the status and well being of girls especially those who belong to the socio-economically backward families with the help of conditional cash transfers. The Kanyashree scheme has two cash transfer components which are an annual incentive of Rs. 750 given to girls between 13 to 18 years studying in class 8 for every year until they continue their education as long as they are unmarried at the time. Second, a one-time grant of Rs. 25000 is given to girls once they reach the age of 18 provided they are unmarried and in the academic or looking for jobs.
