In July 2022, the 300-unit free domestic electricity scheme in Punjab, brought by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has literally been the game changer in the state's power sector and the financial condition of the citizens of the state has undergone a drastic change. Millions of families are those who have benefited from this scheme. This move is considered to be one of the biggest public welfare initiatives today, relieving people from surging electricity bills and offering a new sense of security.
According to government data, nearly 90% of domestic consumers in the state no longer have to pay monthly electricity bills. Till now, expensive monthly bills broke household budgets. Families now use the savings for education and health needs. Harjeet Kaur, a resident of Ludhiana, says, “With electricity bills gone, our household expenses are much more manageable, and we can focus on our children’s education.”
Farmers have also benefited immensely from this project. Given the 24-hour stable and free power supply for irrigation, the cost of diesel-powered motors has almost been eradicated, thereby reducing agricultural costs and improving productivity.
More than ₹5,000 crore has been invested by the state government to strengthen the electricity infrastructure. The motive behind this is to upgrade the transmission and distribution network and reduce power cuts. The Chief Minister Mann says, “Electricity is not a luxury for any citizen, but a basic right.”
Today, this scheme is bringing a new sense of trust, relief, and energy security to homes across Punjab. It is not just a social welfare measure but one big stride toward economic stability and self-reliance for the state.
