Everyone remembers that epic scene from the movie “3 Idiots” where three friends studying in India’s top engineering college break the orthodox barriers to get the placement offers. That was one heck of a moment, which inspired almost every aspiring engineering students to pursue his/her dreams in a fearless way. Well, that was a story of fiction, and now we are going to talk about the truth.
The season of placement has begun at IIT, and top companies are ready with their offers. Astonishingly, Microsoft (the leading software giant) has made its intention very clear by becoming the leading recruiter for US jobs on the day 1 of placement across IITs.
According to reliable sources, Microsoft has offered a whopping package of Rs. 1.4 crore per annum that includes stock options and bonuses as well. This package is offered for profiles in Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters at US, and selected a dozen students from various IITs in India. Meanwhile, Microsoft selected 5 candidates from the engineering and computer science departments at IIT-Bombay campus, however, the final list is yet to be out on Saturday.
It is interesting to note that Microsoft has been keeping an eye in every IIT campus to pick candidates for US profiles. This software giant picked 4 candidates each from the IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras campuses. In addition, two candidates each from IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati were selected for international profiles by Microsoft. The placement offer at IIT Delhi started to make news a computer science student from this campus is believed to bag a mind-boggling package of more than 1 crore from this software conglomerate. Nevertheless, the data is yet to be fact-checked, it’s sure that Microsoft has made its mind to filter out the best from IITs, and they are ready to pay anything for that.
For their Indian branches, Microsoft has offered a package of around Rs. 34 lakh per annum in the first day of placement. Uber International and first time recruiter Rubrik (Data Management Firm) too participated in the placement sessions at different IIT and offered international offers to some of the students this year.
Uber Technologies too didn’t lag behind Microsoft in offering great offers to IITians. The company has supposedly selected one candidate each from Chennai and Mumbai campuses, and offered a whopping package of Rs. 99.8 lakh per annum. Uber visited other campuses as well in search of top technical brains. US firms have made the job easier as they offered alternative backup option to students in their Indian offices in case they don’t get the visas. It is to note that, Apple too participated in offering placement offers, and picked 5 students from IIT Kharagpur.
According to some sources, the demand for data science and artificial intelligence is booming rapidly. Companies such as WorldQuant, Blackstone and Tower Research are among the top brands that offered highest domestic packages to students from IIT. All these companies are said to have offered 45 lakhs on an average to placed candidates.
As far as IIT Bombay is concerned, Golman Sachs made eight offers, five came from Texas instruments, Booz offered placement to 5 candidates and BCG selected seven students. The first day of the placement session was seen to be most productive as many top-notch companies participated to selected candidates across all IITs.
In the first phase of placement session, 1,700 students registered at the Powai Campus, and the college is expecting 225 companies to participate. In IIT Madras, 93 placement offers were made in the 1st phase that includes international offers as well. A total of 195 offers were made at IIT Roorkee, and among them four were international offers by Redmond, Webstaff and Microsoft.
The trend suggests that there’s no great difference in the salary package as compared to last year’s package, however, the number of offers has increased tremendously this year.
