The rich heritage of diversity in India adds our lives in the following ways:

  • We get to know the different cultural traditions.
  • We get to enjoy a variety of music and dance belonging to different states.
  • We get to taste delicious foods from different regions.

3. Do you think the term “unity in diversity” is an appropriate term to describe India? What do you think Nehru is trying to say about Indian unity in the sentence quoted above from his book The Discovery of India?

Answer:

Yes, the term “unity in diversity” is definitely an appropriate term to describe India. India is a land where people from different religions, cultures, creed and castes live together in complete harmony. They celebrate different festivals together and the joys and sorrows of each other. This kind of diversity adds charm to our lives and helps us live together peacefully.

Jawaharlal Nehru in his book 'The Discovery of India' is trying to say that tolerance is very much ingrained in all citizens. India is not only united, but its people also know how to accept the customs and beliefs of others.

4. Underline the line in the poem sung after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which according to you, reflects India’s essential unity.

Answer:

‘The blood of Hindus and Muslims flows together today’ is the line which reflects India’s essential unity.

5. Choose another region in India and do a similar study of the historical and geographical factors that influence the diversity found there. Are these traditional and geographical factors connected to each other? How?
