On June 25, 2025, the Axiom-4 mission, which was postponed due to technical glitches and bad weather, was finally launched today, carrying Peggy Whitson (USA), Shubhanshu Shukla (India), Sławosz Uznański‑Wiśniewski (Poland), and mission specialist Tibor Kapu (Hungary).

And here's an interesting fact about the Axiom-4 mission: Peggy Whitson was NASA's first female and non-military chief of astronauts, as well as the first female commander of the International Space Station.
Born February 9, 1960, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, Peggy Whitson is a 65-year-old retired NASA astronaut who is leading the Axiom-4 mission launched to send astronauts to the International Space Station for research and collaboration.
Education
Peggy graduated from Mt. Ayr Community High School in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, in 1978. She then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1981 and later, a Doctorate in Biochemistry from Rice University in 1985.

From 1981 to 1985, Dr Whitson pursued her graduate studies in Biochemistry at Rice University in Houston, Texas, supported by a Robert A. Welch Predoctoral Fellowship. She then continued at Rice as a Robert A. Welch Postdoctoral Fellow until October 1986.
Afterwards, she joined NASA’s Johnson Space Centre (JSC) in Houston as a National Research Council Resident Research Associate. From April 1988 to September 1989, Whitson supervised the Biochemistry Research Group at KRUG International, a medical sciences contractor for NASA-JSC.
From 1991 to 1997, she held an invitation as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, across the Departments of Internal Medicine and Human Biological Chemistry and Genetics.
In 1997, Whitson also began an Adjunct Assistant Professor position at Rice University in the Maybee Laboratory for Biochemical and Genetic Engineering.
Awards & Honors
Peggy Whitson has received numerous awards throughout her career, including induction into the Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame (2011) and the Russian Medal of Merit for Space (2011).
She was recognised as one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women in 2011 and received the BioHouston Women in Science Award the same year.
Other notable honours include the Texas Women on the Move award (2010), the First Lady of Iowa Award (2010), and the Iowa Transportation Museum's Hero of Valour (2009).
Her alma maters, Rice University and Iowa Wesleyan College, both presented her with Distinguished Alumni Awards in 2010 and 2002, respectively.
NASA has repeatedly honoured her with Space Flight Medals (2002, 2008), the Outstanding Leadership Medal (2006), and multiple Exceptional Service Medals (1995, 2003, 2006, 2008), among others like the Silver Snoopy Award (1995).
Earlier in her career, she received recognition for her academic achievements, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Iowa Wesleyan College (1981) and earning awards such as the Orange van Calhoun Scholarship (1980) and State of Iowa Scholar (1979).
