National Girl Child Day 2024: Every year, January 24 is observed as National Girl Child Day. It was initiated in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the government of India, to spread public awareness about inequities that girls face in Indian society. The day advocates for girl empowerment to protect them worldwide. It aims to raise awareness about challenges faced by girls and demand equal rights and opportunities in education, healthcare and society. Central and state governments launched various schemes to assist girl children to meet their education and other finance-related expenses.
National Girl Child Day 2024: Date, Theme, History, Significance and Why It is Celebrated?
This article will aware you of the top 10 Central Government and State Government schemes:
1. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao: Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was launched by the Government of India on 22nd January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana. BBBP addresses the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and related issues of women's empowerment over a life-cycle continuum.
The eligibility for the central government include:
- A household of girls under the age of ten.
- A Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) should be opened in the name of the girl child in any bank.
- The girl child should be born in India. This system is not open to non-resident Indians.
2. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a small deposit scheme of the Government of India meant exclusively for a girl child and is launched as a part of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Campaign. The scheme is meant to meet the education and marriage expenses of a girl child.
One needs to be:
- The girl child must be below of 10 years of age
- Can be a newborn, until the age of 10 while opting for the scheme
3. Balika Samridhi Yojana: The Balika Samriddhi Yojana will cover girl children in families below the poverty line (BPL) as defined by the Government of India, in rural and urban areas, who are born on or after 15 August 1997. Its objective is to raise the overall status of the girl-child and bring positive change in family and community attitudes towards girl-child.
To be one of the beneficiaries:
- The girl child needs to belong to a family BPL
- The girl children need to be born on or after the 15th of August 1997
4. Mukhyamantri Rajshri Yojana: Mukhyamantri Rajshri Yojana is a financial assistance scheme launched in 2008 by the Government of Rajasthan to empower girl children in the state economically.
The eligibility criteria to enjoy the benefits of Mukhyamantri Rajshri Yojana are:
- The girl child must be a native or resident of Rajasthan.
- The girl child must be born after 1 June 2016.
- The girl child's mother must have a Bhamashah Card.
- The girl child must be born in a private or government medical institution registered with Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY).
- Only two girl children in a family are eligible for the scheme.
5. Mukhyamantri Laadli Laxmi Yojana: Ladli Laxmi Yojana has been launched by the Madhya Pradesh government to create positive thinking among the public towards the birth of girl child in the state, improving the sex Ratio and literacy percentage.
The eligibility criteria for Mukhyamantri Laadli Laxmi Yojana include:
- The girl child's parents must belong to the State of Madhya Pradesh
- The amount is only released if the child is not married off within the age of 18
- Discontinuing education will not be considered
- The scheme is valid for only one child below the poverty line
6. CBSE Udaan Scheme: UDAAN is a project launched by the CBSE under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to address the low enrolment of female students in prestigious engineering institutions and the teaching gap between school education and engineering entrance examinations. The objective is to provide a platform that empowers female students and facilitates their aspiration of joining prestigious engineering institutions so that it enables them to partake in an important role in nation-building.
The rules and guidelines for the CBSE Udaan Scheme are:
- Applicants with a secured average of 70% in class 10 can opt for the scheme.
- They must have a scored minimum of 80% in Science and Mathematics.
- The opting student must have a minimum of 8 and 9 GPA in Maths and Science.
- The program is open to Indian citizens residing in India.
- The selection of the students will be based on merit.
- The annual family income should be less than Rs. 6 lakhs per annum.
7. National Scheme Of Incentives To Girls For Secondary Education: The Centrally Sponsored Scheme - National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education was launched in May 2008. It aims to promote enrollment of girl children in the age group of 14-18 at the secondary stage, especially those who passed Class VIII and to encourage the secondary education of such girls.
- The girl child must be unmarried.
- Below the age of 16.
- The candidate should have passed the 8th grade and enrolled in the 9th.
- Must be enrolled in a govt aided school.
8. Mukhyamantri Kanya Suraksha Yojana: Under the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Suraksha Yojana, the Government of Bihar contributes Rs.2000/- for every Girl Child belonging to the BPL category and born on or after November 22, 2007. The benefit of the Yojana is limited to two girls per family falling below the poverty line. The program aims to improve the sex ratio, encourage birth registration and stop female foeticide.
Eligibility criteria for Mukhyamantri Kanya Suraksha Yojana
- The applicant must be a permanent resident of Bihar.
- The birth of the girl child should be on or after November 22, 2007.
- It is mandatory to have the birth registered to avail the benefits of this scheme.
- Only girls falling under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category will be eligible for the benefits of this scheme.
9. Mazi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana: Mazi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana: On 8th March 2015, the Women and Child Development Department announced the first-of-its-kind scheme "Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree". Under this initiative, the Government shall provide financial incentives for families to retain a girl child, educate her, prevent child marriage and provide skill development.
The eligibility for Mazi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana includes
- Families with up to 7.5 of annual income are eligible for this scheme.
10. Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana: The Nanda Gaura Devi Kanya Dhan Yojana signifies the Uttarakhand government’s commitment to promoting education and empowerment for girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By providing financial assistance, the scheme aims to break barriers and create opportunities for a brighter future for these young women.
- Permanent residency in Uttarakhand
- Annual family income below Rs 15,976 for rural areas and Rs 21,206 for urban areas.
- One needs to be a student of class 12 and of SC, ST, or BPL category.
