What is the Significance of the Frankfurt Book Fair?

The Frankfurter Buchmesse is the largest trade fair for books globally, known for hosting the highest number of publishing companies. It is regarded as the most significant book fair worldwide for international business and negotiations. 

The event plays a key role in book launches and facilitates the sale of international rights and licenses. It brings together publishers, multimedia and technology firms, and content creators from around the globe. 

Participants include publishers, agents, booksellers, librarians, academics, illustrators, service providers, film producers, translators, trade associations, institutions, artists, authors, antiquarians, and software and multimedia suppliers. 

Attendees use the event to gain insights into the publishing industry, network, and conduct business deals.

In 2024, the Frankfurt Book Fair attracted approximately 230,000 visitors. This figure includes 115,000 trade visitors and 115,000 private visitors, marking an increase from previous years. 

The fair, which took place from October 16 to 20, featured over 4,300 exhibitors and hosted more than 3,300 events.

Historically, the event has seen varying attendance numbers; for instance, the highest recorded attendance was in 2019 with over 302,000 visitors.

Welcomes Over Thousands of Visitors

Thousands of exhibitors, including publishers, multimedia and technology companies, and content providers, participate in negotiating publishing rights and license fees.

The first three days of the Frankfurt Book Fair are reserved for professional visitors, while the general public is welcomed over the weekend. 

Organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse GmbH, a branch of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, the fair showcased over 7,300 exhibitors from more than 100 countries and drew over 286,000 visitors in 2017.
