CBSE Term 1 Exam 2021 - Update

CBSE Term 1 Exam 2021 – MCQ / Exam Pattern Update: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a very important update about the upcoming CBSE Term 1 Exam 2021 for Term 1 / November Board. The notification which was released in Sept 2021, discussed in detail the exam pattern and format of the CBSE Term 1 Exam for both Class 10 and 12 students. The notification read that “As emphasized in the NEP 2020, Competency Based Questions have become part of the Sample Question Papers for the Term 1 of Academic Session 2021-22. These questions include Multiple Choice Question (both simple and complex), Assertion – Reasoning Questions and Case Based Questions.”

With the date for CBSE Term 1 Exam approaching fast, it is important for students to understand the MCQ based exam pattern and how cracking then 50% Competency Based Questions can help them score the maximum marks. The same has been discussed for key subjects below:

Science - Competency Based MCQs

As per the exam pattern shared by the CBSE and through the CBSE Science Sample Papers, it has been noticed that the Competency-based MCQs are not the complex case-based MCQs with a diagram and case-study paragraph. Instead, for science-subject, the Competency Based MCQs can be asked in the following forms:

  • Diagram
  • Table
  • Statement-Combination
  • Labelling-Based MCQs

In the official CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper, MCQs based on the aforementioned format / type accounted for 50% of the questions.

Apart from this, students should also expect Stand-alone MCQs, which will be used for assessment of competencies in the Term 1 Exam. Stand Alone MCQs based on a diagram will be relatively easier to answer for the students. For Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), stand-alone MCQs will a diagram as a diagnostic tool to help students’ analytical and critical skills.

Mathematics – Competency Based MCQs

For Mathematics subject, the competency-based MCQs will comprise of simple, complex and case study-based questions. The Math questions asked in Term 1 exam will assess, both, low order skills (remember and understanding) along with high order skills (applying, analysing, evaluating and creating), of the students. As per the official Mathematics sample paper, the final exam paper for term 1 will comprise of a combination of Assertion and Reasoning-based MCQs and process-driven and diagram MCQs, to test high order skills. Students should use CBSE’s competency based Question Bank PDF which is available on the official website to practice and prepare well for the Term 1 Exam.

English – Competency Based MCQs

English is another key subject that many students often find difficult to master in both Class 10 as well as Class 12. With the introduction of Term 1 Exam, Competency-Based MCQs will also be part of English subject question paper. For Term 1 English subject exam, students should expect MCQs in a standard format for letters, stories, articles, etc. The competency-based question in English subject will assess reading, understanding, analytical and decision making skills of the students.

Apart from writing section, students should also expect Assertion/Reasoning MCQs based on Literature and Reading section of Class 10 and 12. These questions will be assess, both, low order skills in students (remembering and understanding) as well as the high order skills of the students with a non-technical approach.
