The state of Tamil Nadu has declared a holiday for the schools and colleges in 6 of its districts due to heavy rainfall expected in the coming week. The state is expected to receive heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours due to the low-pressure area just off the Sri Lankan coast intensifying into a depression and moving towards Kerala.
According to media reports, a holiday has been declared for the schools and colleges in the districts of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Theni, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Vellore and Ramanathapuram due to the heavy rainfall which is to be received in these areas.
Tamil Nadu to receive rainfall until Friday
According to S Balachandran, deputy director-general, Indian Meteorological Department, the low pressure which is to form a depression and deep depression is causing eastward winds which will blow over Tamil Nadu and strengthen and gather more moisture.
As per reports, many places in southern Tamil Nadu are likely to receive moderate rainfall until Friday due to the weather system lying over the Comorin area. According to the Meteorological Department, apart from these, a few places in the Northern part of the state have also sighted chances of moderate rainfall until Friday.
Most of the weather stations spread across the state have received a widespread rainfall as per reports on Tuesday. Tiruvarur recorded the highest rainfall followed by Kancheepuram district and Valangaiman in the past 24 hours. Other districts like Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Thanjavur have also received moderate rainfall according to reports.
Officials from the weather department have stated that the low-pressure area which lies over the Comorin area and adjoining the equatorial Indian Ocean is most likely to intensify into a depression over the Lakshwadeep-Maldives areas and the adjoining southeast Arabian Sea on Wednesday.
