The Indira Gandhi National Open University is starting a Post Graduate Diploma course in Computer Applications from the upcoming academic session, The School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS), IGNOU will start the course from the January 2020 academic cycle. The objective of the programme is to prepare graduate students for rewarding careers in the software industry. In a statement by the University, it said that the programme will provide the students with thorough and sound knowledge on the theoretical and application-oriented courses keeping up with the latest computer software development.
The emphasis of the course will be upon the application of software technology that includes solving mathematical, communications, computing or networking and commercial problems. The course, aimed at skill development in computers, utilizes various technologies. It is meant to prepare the student to aim for a programmer or web developer position in a software company to design. The students undertaking the course will be able to build small business application software or even work as lab personnel or technician in institutions or as freelancers to develop software projects.
The course duration will vary from minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 4 years and will be offered in both January and July cycle of admissions. It is a stand-alone programme consisting of 12 courses worth 36 credits. The PG Diploma course has been designed with a semester approach in mind and has been divided into two semesters per year (January-June and July-December). The examinations for the course will be also held twice a year - one in June for the January to June semester and the other in December for the July to December semester. The medium of instruction of the course will be English. Students will be at liberty to appear in any of the examinations during the year subject to completing within the minimum time frame and other formalities prescribed for the programme.
Students with a Bachelor's degree of minimum 3-year duration from a recognized University and with Mathematics as one of the subjects at 10+2 level or graduation level are eligible to apply for the programme. Students not fulfilling these eligibility criteria will be required to pursue and pass the BCS-012 course concurrently with PGDCA.
