The National Testing Agency has decided to drop Gujarati, the only regional language, as a medium of examination from the year 2021 onwards. Students will be required to attempt the JEE Main exam in Hindi and English only. An official from the agency said that JEE Main advisory Committee decided to drop Gujarati as a medium for question paper from 2021 and the questions will be available in English and Hindi only.
NTA took over CBSE as a conducting body for JEE Main exam since 2019. The agency since then has introduced several changes in the examination. This included conducting the exam twice a year in the online mode as a Computer-based test. Students until this year could attempt the exam in Hindi, English as well as Gujarati.
The CBSE, which was the conducting body of JEE Main exam before 2019 introduced Marathi, Urdu and Gujarati in addition to Hindi and English as languages for attempting the JEE Main question paper. Urdu and Marathi were dropped in 2016 as a medium of attempting the exam but Gujarati was retained. However, as the state engineering colleges of Gujarat, since 2016, have preferred GUJCET over JEE Main for admission of candidates, the advisory committee of JEE Main decided to drop the Gujarat language as a medium for attempting the exam.
Around 2.4 lakhs students who qualify JEE Main 2020 will be screened through JEE Advanced for admission into IITs. JEE Advanced exam is conducted once every year by one of the IITs on a rotatory basis.
