Maharashtra to get 700 MBBS seats for private medical college

Medical Education Minister said the centre is likely to approve the proposal by next week. In case the proposal for additional MMBS seats in the state-run medical colleges is cleared, Maharashtra State will receive 600 to 700 seats this year for MBBS Admissions.

State Medical Education Minister, Girish Mahajan announced that another 700 seas for MBBS admission will be added for private medical colleges in Maharashtra in the coming days. This decision was made after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare sanctioned 970 seats in civic and government-run medical colleges in the State. Medical Education Minister said the centre is likely to approve the proposal by next week. In case the proposal for additional MMBS seats in the state-run medical colleges is cleared, Maharashtra State will receive 600 to 700 seats this year for MBBS Admissions.

Girish Mahajan also informed the government had initially demanded or 2000 extra seats however, it is up to the centre to approve the same. He also added the Maharashtra Government was pushing for more seats in the government colleges in the State. Maharashtra has 11 private medical colleges with an overall intake capacity of 1850 students.

The Union Minister, on Friday, authorized additional 4,470 medical seats across government-run colleges in the country following the mandatory incorporation of 10% Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota in open category. Earlier this month, the Board of Governors, MCI (Medical Council of India had requested for applications from Maharashtra Government to increase the MBBS seats across India. The state had requested for additional 813 PG and 1740 UG seats in Maharashtra government medical colleges. Maharashtra has about 3160 mbbs seats for UG and 2030 seats for PG programmes. As per officials, the additional seats have been calculated to ensure the total number of seats in open category must be almost similar which existed before the execution of 10% EWS quota and 16% SEBC quota.
