Maharashtra State Government has announced that the Marathi language will be made compulsory for all the schools in Maharashtra from 2020-21 onwards for classes 1 to 6. The new rule will be applicable for the English, Hindi, and Marathi medium schools in the state.
Maharashtra Marathi language minister Subhash Desai and Maharashtra school Education Department minister Varsha Gaikwad reviewed a meeting on the progress of making the Marathi language a compulsory subject in the primary schools across the state. The meeting was conducted via video conferencing along with senior-most officials of the Education Department of Maharashtra. Other members present at the video conference meeting included Bal Bharti, along with the Marathi language department officials, and the chairman of the Marathi Commission.
Marathi to be compulsory from Next Academic Session
According to the instructions provided by Subhash Desai, the next academic session should implement the rule of Marathi as a compulsory subject adding that the class-wise syllabus of the language has to be planned before the commencement of the next session. He also added that the schools must be provided with the textbooks and study materials for the students from class 1 to 6 as soon as possible.
New Rules to be implemented
The School Education Department will also be issuing a notification regarding the implementation of the new rule and following the new law will be mandatory. The rule was passed by both the houses of the legislature in the previous budget session. A meeting of the officials will also be conducted to enforce the law and a task force will also be set up to prepare the new rules to be implemented.
