Grading System in CBSE For Class 10

As per CBSE norms, for awarding the grades, the Board shall put all the passed students in a rank order and will award grades as follows:

  • A-1 Top 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • A-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • B-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • B-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • C-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • C-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • D-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • D-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
  • E Failed candidates

Notes:

(a) Minor variations in proportion of candidates to adjust ties will be made.

(b) In case of a tie, all the students getting the same score, will get the same grade. If the number of students at a score point need to be divided into two segments, the smaller segment will go with the larger.

(c) Method of grading will be used in subjects where the number of candidates who have passed is more than 500.

(d) In respect of subjects where total number of candidates passing in a subject is less than 500, the grading would be adopted on the pattern of grading and distribution in other similar

subjects.

How CBSE Calculate Grades for Class 10?

The CBSE Class 10 grading system for 2024 focuses on grades (A1-E) instead of percentages. However, students can calculate an approximate percentage using their grade points. Here's how it works:

Grading System:

  • Grades range from A1 (highest) to E (not passed).
  • Each grade carries a specific grade point.

Calculating Your Percentage (Approximate):

  1. Find Grade Points: Look at your results and find the grade point assigned for each subject.
  2. Add Grade Points: Add the grade points of all your subjects.
  3. Divide by Number of Subjects: Since CBSE considers 5 main subjects, divide the total grade points by 5.
  4. Multiply by 9.5: This factor (9.5) is derived from historical exam performance. Multiply the result of step 3 by 9.5.

Example:

  • Suppose you received these grade points: Subject 1 (9.2), Subject 2 (8.9), Subject 3 (9.5), Subject 4 (8.0), Subject 5 (8.7).
  • Total Grade Points = 9.2 + 8.9 + 9.5 + 8.0 + 8.7 = 44.3
  • Divide by the number of Subjects = 44.3 / 5 = 8.86
  • Approximate Percentage = 8.86 * 9.5 = 84.17 (Please note this is an approximation, not the exact percentage)
