Most students, who have a problem in understanding at school, have a habit of not asking their doubts from their teachers. Students generally stop themselves from clearing their problems and doubts by thinking various things like classmates fear/shyness, feeling stupid in front of everyone etc. They do not understand the fact that their doubts if left unclear will create problems for them later during the exams. Students who do not ask their doubts from teacher or elders suffer from lack of clarity on topics and hence, get fewer marks or flunk in exams. In this article, we are discussing the reason and consequences of students not clearing their doubts from their teachers.
Reasons that stop students from asking their doubts in classroom –
Not attentive in class –
When a teacher is teaching in class then the students do not pay attention (talking with classmates or lost in thoughts) and therefore, they won’t have any idea about their doubts. Not knowing your doubts is one of the common problems with students. Because they were not listening to their teachers and hence, have no idea what was being taught and they are not able to identify their doubts about the concepts.
Hesitate in asking –
Students, generally stop themselves from asking their doubts because they feel shy or hesitate. Moreover, they feel that by asking questions they will be interrupting their teacher and the teacher will scold them for stopping when they were explaining a concept to the class.
Why should I only ask the doubts? –
And the most common reason that every student has felt and thought at least once is that why should I only ask the doubts from a teacher? this is an excuse that student gives to themselves. Or they wait for other students to ask their doubts so that they don’t have to take efforts of asking the doubts. Stopping themselves from asking their doubts by thinking this hampers their understanding of the concepts being taught in class, because other students may not have the same doubts.
What would my classmates or friends think about me? –
Generally, students stop themselves from asking their doubts by thinking that their classmates will think they are stupid or that they are slow learners. They think other students will make fun of them as no one else has doubts about the concept and only they cannot understand the simple topic.
Not able to set questions for their doubts –
Sometimes, students are not able to frame their questions and hence, they do not ask questions. They feel how will they ask the question from the teacher? Or will they be able to make their teacher understand the complete problem? Or sometimes, the language is the barrier and they feel they will fumble while speaking English and their classmates will make fun of them.
What happens when students do not ask their doubts from their teachers?
Lack of clarity -
They will understand the consequences of not asking their doubts from the teachers during the exams when they will not be able to learn and remember the concepts because they did not understand it properly. Lack of clarity in concepts will become a barrier in the complete chapter. Not have an understanding of even a basic formula can make a simple question look difficult in exams.
Develops a wrong pattern of learning –
If a student stops himself from asking doubts from the teacher then, he will do that every time. This will develop a bad learning habit in him and can have negative impacts on their education as well as academic records.
Students lack confident –
Surely, if the students will lack knowledge about a topic then they will never have the courage to speak about or discuss that topic with their friends or classmates. You may have seen that a student who is not good at mathematics will always avoid any mathematical question or will get nervous if asked questions on the subject. This is because they lack knowledge in mathematics and they never cleared their doubts on it to improve in mathematics.
What actions do students need to take?
1. Always ask your doubts from your teachers or elders whenever you face any problem/difficulty in understanding any concept.
2. Develop a curious approach towards your studies. You need to know everything in your syllabus and your books. It is for your knowledge only.
3. Do not consider your studies as something that will be of no use in later life. Whatever, you study is related to the real-life circumstances and if you have little or no knowledge about it then you would not be able to understand the universe.
4. Always remember, the trick to scoring well in exams is having conceptual knowledge. If your concepts are clear then, you can make the answers in your own language. You will get marks for it because the concept is correct.
