WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform that is used by over 2 billion people worldwide, has become everyone’s partner in daily messaging and communication. The platform is continuously working on launching new features to make the platform more seamless for its users.
The platform is now rolling out a bunch of exciting new features for WhatsApp Channels that promise to enhance user engagement and communication. The popular one-way broadcasting feature will now get voice note experiences, interactive polls, and channel updates.
What are WhatsApp Channels?
WhatsApp Channels are a relatively new feature on the popular messaging platform, launched in June 2023. They essentially function as one-way broadcast tools, allowing users to follow brands, businesses, or individuals and receive updates from them. Think of it like a public newsletter within the WhatsApp interface.
Here's a breakdown of the key characteristics of WhatsApp Channels:
- One-way communication: Unlike regular chats or groups on WhatsApp, Channels are designed for information dissemination, not back-and-forth conversations. Creators can post updates, share text, images, videos, and even voice notes, but followers cannot directly reply.
- Diverse content: Channels cater to a wide range of interests and purposes. You can find Channels from news organisations, government agencies, educational institutions, celebrities, businesses, and even individual creators.
- Discoverability and following: Users can discover Channels through a dedicated "Updates" tab in their WhatsApp app, where they can also find suggested channels based on their interests. Following a Channel is simple and requires just a tap.
- Privacy-focused: WhatsApp emphasises privacy in Channels. Users' phone numbers are not visible to Channel creators, and followers' identities remain anonymous.

WhatsApp Channels gained over 500 million users in November 2023 with Meta Chief Mark Zuckerberg announcing the staggering number on his Facebook post. He stated: “500 million monthly actives on WhatsApp Channels in the first 7 weeks! Great to see the WA community so engaged.”

Following the huge success of WhatsApp Channels, here are some new features that are being added:
Giving Voice to Channels:
Channel creators can now send voice updates, adding a personal touch to their broadcasts. Imagine your favourite author sharing a reading from their latest work, a musician offering a teaser of their new song, or even a chef giving a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their kitchen. Voice updates make Channels feel more intimate and bring creators closer to their audience.
The Power of Polls:
Interactive polls are landing on Channels, letting creators engage their followers directly. Imagine a clothing brand asking its audience about their favourite colour for a new design, or a news channel gauging public opinion on a current event. Polls turn passive viewers into active participants, fostering a sense of community and driving engagement.
The feature was in testing mode and was observed by WABetaInfo and now it has been announced by Mark Zuckerberg on his WhatsApp Channel.
Mark Zuckerberg states: “Hi everyone! We're announcing a bunch of new features for WA channels including voice notes, multiple admins and sharing to status and polls, which is great because I need help settling a debate.”

More Admins, More Fun:
Managing a large Channel just got easier. Up to 16 admins can now collaborate and share responsibilities, ensuring smooth operation and consistent content flow. This is ideal for teams, communities, and anyone who wants to spread the workload and keep their Channel thriving.
Whether you're a Channel creator or a dedicated follower, these new features bring a welcome dose of excitement to your WhatsApp experience.
