Nidhi Tewari, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, was appointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's private secretary, the Personnel Ministry announced in an order on Sunday.
The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) formally announced this nomination, which was approved by the Cabinet's Appointments Committee.

Nidhi Tewari’s Official Appointment
The ACC order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training states, "The ACC has approved the appointment of Nidhi Tewari, IFS 2014, currently serving as deputy secretary in the Prime Minister's Office, as private secretary to the PM in Level 12 of the pay matrix with immediate effect on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
Who is Nidhi Tewari?
Nidhi Tewari is a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the Mahmoorganj neighborhood of Varanasi. She secured the 96th rank in the 2013 Civil Services Examination and initially worked as an Assistant Commissioner in Varanasi before joining the Indian Foreign Service.
What is Nidhi Tewari’s Salary?
Tewari's current role as Deputy Secretary in the PMO is positioned at Level 12 of the pay matrix. Her tenure in this role will continue until further notice or until the end of her current employment.
Nidhi Tiwari, as the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, will receive a salary based on Pay Matrix Level-14, which is ₹1,44,200 per month. Along with this, she will also get additional benefits like dearness allowance, house allowance, and travel allowance, bringing her total monthly salary to around ₹2 lakh.
Nidhi Tewari’s Role in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)
Tewari started working in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in 2022 as an Under Secretary. On January 6, 2023, she was promoted to Deputy Secretary. She plays a key role in the ‘Foreign and Security’ division and reports directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Nidhi Tewari’s Contribution to MEA
Prior to joining the PMO, Nidhi used to work in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs. Her expertise and understanding in international relations helped her contribute significantly to India’s foreign policy and security matters during her tenure at MEA.
Nidhi’s Connection to Varanasi
Nidhi Tewari has been associated with PM Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency in Varanasi since his first Lok Sabha election days, i.e. 2014. Tewari’s hometown, Mahmoorganj, is a significant part of this parliamentary seat.
