On Wednesday, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student party said that it will approach the UGC with signatures from the students of JNU over the issue of fee hike and the revised hostel manual. The student body members also said that if the UGC does not resonate with their demands, then they will sit on an infinite strike until the fee hike is rolled back.
Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University have been protesting since 28th October 2019 against the increase of fee and the new hostel manual which includes a provision on dress codes and curfew timings. During the protest on Monday, 11th November 2019 a clash broke out between the police personnel and the students.
The Delhi University and the Banaras Hindu University have extended their solidarity to the JNU students and student union members. On Tuesday, members of the students’ union of the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University issued a statement against alleged policing actions on agitating students of JNU that took place on Monday. The statement said that the JNU administration has increased the use of state forces of oppression like Police and the Para-military to suppress dissent and collective voices of the students. As such, the DU students’ union has extended their support against such oppression.
Around the same time on Tuesday, a group of young people claiming to be students of the Banaras Hindu University staged a protest at the campus in Varanasi. They raised slogans in support of the JNU students along with slogans to stop the commercialization of education in BHU.
