A new study centre will be constructed by the Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) in the capital’s east district, Tahirpur. The new centre is meant to cater to thousands of students who come from areas such as Loni and nearby. SOL is also planning to start new centres in Uttam Nagar and Rohini areas. More than 20,000 students commute from these areas. SOL has also announced that it will build a new examination branch to avoid delay in exams and result declaration.
SOL has taken this decision as a result of the protests from first-year students after the implementation of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) system. The protesting students alleged that the study centres of SOL were far away and there wasn’t enough space for accommodating the students who came for Personal Contact Programme classes on weekends.
Ramesh Bharadwaj, officer on special duty said that SOL is planning to streamline the system. He also spoke about the implementation of CBCS and its criticism and said the module had to be implemented as MHRD’s Open and Distance Learning system does not recognize the institute and as such, the degrees of SOL students would be de-recognized. The CBCS will ensure that SOL degrees are at par with those awarded by the regular colleges. He also said that that parity will be ensured when exam, curriculum and result schedules are the same for all. This has also led the SOL to construct a new examination branch, especially for the school.
Also, as per the new Open Distance Learning guidelines, the study materials will have to be provided to the enrolled students on time. Bharadwaj also said that they had published more than 90% study materials and students are being invited daily in batches of 3000 to collect the same. Soft copies were distributed since 25th August, a week before classes commenced on 1st September 2019.
