World University Rankings 2020 Announced: Times Higher Education (THE) has announced World University Rankings 2020. The rankings were released on 11th September 2019 which saw University of Oxford bag the top honour of being the best university in the world for the fourth consecutive year. The second rank on THE World University Rankings 2020 was secured by CalTech or California Institute of Technology, rising three position from last year’s 5th Rank. University of Cambridge has fallen from its earlier second position to 3rd Rank in the 2020 edition of World University Rankings. The 4th and 5th Ranks went to Stanford University and MIT, respectively.
Performance of Indian Universities
Among Indian Universities, all the top universities and higher education institutes have slipped last their last year’s standing. As compared to 2019’s standing, IISc has fallen in the bracket of 301-350 rank place. IISc is joined by another Indian institute i.e. IIT Ropar in the same 301-350 rank bracket. However, one positive development in the World University Rankings 2020 has been that overall, more number of universities and institutes have found place in the rankings this year. In comparison to Indian Universities, 81 Chinese Universities have found place on the Rankings.

| I think it is disappointing to note that several of our top higher education institutes have slipped in International Rankings. This should serve as a wake-up call for all the stakeholders, who need to put in more efforts to improve the state of affairs as far as higher education sector is concerned. The key areas that need special focus are increased industry-academic interaction and new opportunities for the students in terms of both research as well as practical exposure. A silver-lining or a key takeaway for Indian Institutes from World University Rankings 2020 is that more number of institutes have found a place in the Rankings. This is a good sign indicating that our past efforts have borne fruits and are helping more Indian Universities augment their international presence. However, more efforts are required to augment this positive development and India should aim to feature its top higher education institutes among the top 100 in next 3 to 5 years.

| We may feel good if we see our Indian Universities on the list and that too on Top 50/ 100. But what is more important is whether these Universities are able to produce talents for the corporate world/ govt. sector, make India proud and in turn succeed in their career goal. I certainly feel that Ranking may help these Universities to attract foreign students which in turn will help in generating revenues and get associated with corporate world outside India and partner for their R&D initiatives. To scale up the ranking, firstly Universities should check the happiness index of their Faculty members. Moreover, Faculty members should be encouraged to take up more corporate assignments and set up R&D units (realistic not dummy) inside the campus. I also feel that Govt. Authorities has to come up with stringent rules to qualify before and after becoming an University.

| World University Ranking has been disappointing for Indian University ecosystem as for the first time since 2012 not even a single university has managed to feature in the Top 300 category! But if you carefully analyse parameters of rankings - you will understand we performed “very poorly” on International Faculty & International students - two of the 6 parameters which decided World University Ranking! To Improve its ranking - India needs to focus and fast track implementation of its flagship program “Study in India” to promote Indian Education System for International students.
