Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on Wednesday said that the newly drafted National Education Policy will be the foundation for building a new India. The minister while addressing a gathering at the Lovely Professional University said that suggestions for the NEP are taken from different stakeholders which include parents, students, teachers, NGO’s and Scientists before a final NEP is brought out.
The new National Education Policy which covers elementary to college education was first formulated in 1968 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi while the second draft was prepared by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.
The minister said that the MEP will be India-centric and solid enough that it will prove to the foundation to build a new India. He also added that the new NEP is being brought after a gap of 33 years.
While speaking at the event, the minister stated that at present the ministry is engaged in the world’s biggest exercise of gathering feedback and suggestions from stakeholders like students, parents, teachers, politicians, scientists, NGO’s and most importantly the common man before finalizing the draft of the New Education Policy.
The minister also said that over 2 lakh suggestions have so far been received which are being considered with utmost care. He also added that the world will soon look up to the country inviting them to join in the vision of giving a new direction. He pointed out that today India possesses Knowledge, Science, Research, Ideas, and Traditions.
The minister also told the students at the event that India is no longer a country that sits in the far corner but is one which is at the centre stage. The minister distributed Rs. 4.01 crores to 295 scholars sponsored by Lovely Professional University under its study grant project which enables the students to study in top universities in the country.
