NIOS is the board of education for distance education which comes under government of India. This was established by ministry of human resource development and it was started with the main objective of providing education inexpensively to remote areas. NIOS provides education at both secondary and senior secondary examinations, and consists of enrolment of about 1.5 million students at both the levels. NIOS enrolls approximate 350,000 students annually. The same also has centers for Indians expats in UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Nepal, Canada, and United States. 

NIOS is known as National Institute of open schooling. NIOS conducts public examination twice in a year i.e. October and November. In order to deposit the fee and other documents, NIOS has introduced the online system of submission. This system has proved to be extremely beneficial for the candidates appearing for open schooling. Not only online mode, but there is also an option of depositing fee through offline mode. 

As stated above, NIOS has various courses to offer at different levels. For instance, 

1.    OBE ‘A’ LEVEL COURSE –Equivalent to class III
2.    OBE ‘B’ LEVEL COURSE – Equivalent to class V
3.    OBE ‘C’ LEVEL COURSE – Equivalent to class VIII
4.    Secondary course – equivalent to X
5.    Senior secondary course – Equivalent to class XII
6.    Vocational education courses 
7.    Life enrichment programs
As mentioned above, the examinations are held twice in year in the months of April-May and October-November, as per the dates fixed by NIOS. The results of these examinations held in October are usually declared in the month of December. In 2012 there were approximately 1 lakh 53 thousand appeared for the examination of NIOS 10th and on the other hand registration of 1 lakh 72 thousand was done for class 12th. As far as the pass percentage of class 10th examinations was concerned, the girls outshined the boys with 45.21 per cent of males having passed the examination, while the pass percentage of females was 44.19. As compared to class statistics of class 12th, the pass percentage of girls were 39.10 to that 37.99 of boys.
This system of education is not found under haste, but it includes well planned departments and courses with standard curriculum and examination schemes. The system comprises of well-planned schemes which provides elementary education to the drop outs.
