Centre set to approve IIM for Telangana

The Central Government is set to approve a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) for Telangana. The approval has come in five years after the state of Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

According to media reports, the Human Resource Development Ministry had prepared a proposal this week and a Cabinet note will also be prepared once the plan received the minister’s approval stamp. According to reports, it is also expected that the institute will be located in Hyderabad.

The proposal for setting up the Indian Institute of Management was fast-tracked after the Prime Minister’s Office wrote to the central ministry last week asking for it to make a decision on the requests received from the state of Telangana which includes one from the state’s Chief Minister. A week was given to the ministry to come to a decision.

The Andhra Pradesh Re-organization Act also promises an Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management, an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Central University, Petroleum University, Agricultural University and an Indian Institute of Information and Technology for Andhra Pradesh. While for Telangana Tribal University and Horticulture University is on the list. An Indian Institute of Management has however not been committed to Telangana but it is to change now.

Since 2014 the Central Government has established close to seven new Indian Institute of Management in Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir so far.

According to previous media reports, the Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari of Telangana had in 2018 placed a request for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad.

IIM’s are the top management institutions in the country offering postgraduate, doctoral and executive education in Management studies. There are roughly 20 IIM's established across the country.
