Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday took to Twitter to congratulate economist Abhijit Banerjee on the Nobel Prize for Economics awarded to him. Kejriwal while congratulating Banerjee stated that the Delhi Government’s education reform scheme ‘Chunauti’ which helped keep a check on dropout rates of the students was inspired by Banerjee’s work.
Kejriwal stated that Abhijit Banerjee’s path-breaking work benefitted lakhs of children studying in Delhi government schools and one of the government's most important education reform which transformed government school teaching was based on Banarjee’s model.
Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Banerjee in a series of tweets on his incredible feat for his work on poverty alleviation which was recognized for the Nobel Prize for Economics.
Apart from the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also congratulated Banerjee for his work on school education and poor children. Sisodia also added that the government of Delhi has derived a lot of inspiration from him and his work and there was a good understanding with him.
Delhi government introduced the Chunauti scheme in 2016 seeking to check dropout rates of students and improve the education quality with special focus on the weaker students. The government had also announced a consecutive version of the scheme in 2018 under which students are mapped and the weakest among them is given special focus in order to enhance their learning levels from classes 6 to 8.
The Nobel Prize for Economics was won by Abhijit Banerjee along with his wife Ester Duflo and economist Michael Kermer jointly. They won the Nobel Prize for their experimental approach to alleviate global poverty.
The official press release announcing the Nobel Prize states that the team developed a unique experimental approach at answering difficult and non-quantifiable questions regarding poverty and its elimination. The approach by the trio has explained the global poverty in smaller issued which can be solved easily thereby impacting at the grass-root level. It has also been stated that the research findings have helped streamline the research and also helped in finding tangible results in fighting poverty in practice. A lot of their research has helped in solving healthcare issues in Kenya and also improve remedial tutoring in schools in India.
