IIM Ahmedabad Placement 2017: Domestic salary packages rise by 10%, highest package of Rs 53 Lakhs

IIM Ahmedabad – one of the top MBA colleges in India has formally announced their MBA placements report for the year 2017. Traditionally, the placements reports of premier B-schools such as IIMs, serves as an indicator of the general health of the management sector as a career option. This year, the IIM Ahmedabad Placement report has thrown up some interesting facts and insights that can help us understand the general direction which in MBA as a career option is advancing. Even, MBA aspirants and experts eagerly wait for the report of IIM Ahmedabad – the most respected B-school in India, as they follow the IPRS standard for the compilation of Placement data which means it is accurate and free of any kind of ambiguity.

IIM Ahmedabad Placement Period

Before we actually move towards the actual numbers of the MBA placement report, we must also assess and understand the placement period for which it has been compiled. For 2017, the IIM Ahmedabad conducted the placement sessions during the month of February 2017 in 3 clusters. This essentially means that the IIM A Placement for PGP (Post Graduate Programme) was completed in three sessions with the last session being held on 19th February 2017.

Student Participants

The current batch of PGP at IIM Ahmedabad consisted of 400 students out of which 386 sought placement through institute’s placement sessions. The 14 students, who stayed away from the placement process as they preferred entrepreneurship, sought placement outside the campus and did not seek placement for other reasons.

Placement Process

The IIM A follow a two pronged approach to placements for 2017 i.e. the first process i.e. the lateral placement process was aimed at students with work experience while the second process was more oriented towards cohort based placement.

Lateral Placement Process: Under the lateral placement process, firms were invited to interview students from IIM A who holds relevant work experience. These candidates were offered mid-level managerial job profiles, which meant that their work experience was taken into account and job offers were made in accordance with that. Almost 50% of the batch was eligible for the lateral placement process.

Cohort Placement Process: Cohort Placement was the one where firms were grouped together in clusters based on the type of job profiles they were offering. These cohorts then were invited to campus for the placement sessions.

Dream Application Option

This year, IIM Ahmedabad also introduced the option of ‘Dream Application’ as part of its placement process. Under this, students were allowed to opt for the sector and functions of their choice, which they saw as their dream career options. Students were allowed to make ‘Dream Applications’ to any of the firms participating in the placement activities, even if they had received an offer. The ‘Dream Application’ is aimed at helping students get recognized by the companies as per their passion and also gives students a chance to build their dream career.

Domestic Salary Trends

Now, coming to the business end of the report, the IIM Ahmedabad Placements 2017 revealed some key insights into domestic salary trends of MBA sector. As per the IPRS audited report, the IIM A saw a hike of 10.4% in the maximum salary being offered to their students, which translates to Rs Rs 5 lakhs per annum in terms of absolute number. The highest domestic salary offered this year stood at Rs 53 lakhs. In addition to this, the average salary being offered to IIM A management graduates also rose by Rs 44,000/-. International Salary Trends

Coming to international placement packages at IIM Ahmedabad for 2017, the trends show a decline as compared to last year. While last year, the maximum international package offered to IIM Ahmedabad student stood at Rs 1.03 crore, this year it has fallen to Rs 85.27 lakhs. Similarly, the average international package offered has also seen downfall of around 3 lakhs from Rs 49.00 lakhs in 2016 to Rs 45.62 lakhs this year. Top Recruiters

This year, the global e-commerce giant Amazon emerged as the top recruiter at the IIM Ahmedabad, with 18 offers. The second and third places were grabbed by McKinsey with 15 offers and Goldman Sachs with 9 offers. Hindustan Unilever emerged as the top dog in the field of sales and marketing with 7 offers followed by P&G, SC Johnson and Samsung with 6 offers each. The general management domain was dominated by TAS with 10 offers whereas Sprinklr extended 9 offers in consumer Tech.

A total of 120 companies participated in the IIM A Placements 2017 this year with 40 first time recruiters participating in the placement sessions this year. The sector-wise breakup of recruiters is given below:

  • Top Recruiters in Management Consulting Domain: Accenture Strategy, A T Kearney, Bain & Co and Oliver Wyman
  • Top Recruiters from Investment Banking Domain: Citibank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Kotak IB and Standard Chartered
  • Top BFSI Recruiters: American Express, Fullerton and RBL
  • Top Recruiters from Sales and Marketing: Airtel, Asian Paints, HUL, ITC, Nestlé and P&G
  • Enterprise Tech and Consumer Tech: MobiKwik, Rivigo and Sprinklr

More focus upon Entrepreneurship

Staying true to its commitment of fostering the spirit of Entrepreneurship among its students, the IIM A has also seen rise in the number of students opting out of the placement process to start their own venture. This year, a total of 8 students who opted out of the IIM placements with the intent to launch their own ventures in a diverse array of domains including adventure tourism, data analytics, e-commerce, food processing.

With the aim to support their entrepreneurial dreams, the institute has extended a three year placement holiday to these students. Under this, these 8 students will be allowed to participate in placements in one of the next two years in the event that their venture does not work out.

IPRS, CRISIL and Brickwork Ratings (BWR) verified Placement Data

IIM Ahmedabad has adopted the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) to compile their placement report. The Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) is an effort to standardize B-school placement reports to build a common denominator for placement data. In addition to this, IIM Ahmedabad also gets their reports audited by CRISIL and Brickwork Ratings to assure accuracy of the data being provided.
