A technology reviewer makes money by telling the customers how to use a new gadget or technology
Does the latest gizmo in the market attract you more than your girlfriend or boyfriend? Can you compare the technicalities of Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and iPhone4 and suggest which one will be more suitable for a young business executive? Were you able to twig the intricacies of the latest controversy surrounding BlackBerry’s emails which could not be intercepted by Indian security agencies?
If the answer to the above questions is a thumping ‘yes’ then you can very well make your name as a ‘Technology Reviewer’.
Gadget-mania
Generation Z is madly obsessed with gadgets that can simply their life and keep them connected, informed and entertained 24x7x365. However, the technology keeps changing at such a fast pace that even a ‘real’ broadband connection (unlike in India where 256kbps is advertised as broadband) fails to keep us updated about the latest trends. Here comes the role of a reviewer who can clarify to the potential consumers how they can benefit from new technology.
How to do it?
Simple enough. Make it simple! Any technology is useful only when it is user-friendly. However, it has been observed that most people struggle to change their habits when it comes to gadgets. All that a technology reviewer has to do is analyse the new gadget, gizmo, product or technology and describe its positives and negatives in layman’s language.
Qualifications
More than the qualification, it is the passion for the world of gadgets that you will need to enter the profession. A degree in science or technology and probably an MBA along with excellent communication skills will sail you smoothly in the sea of technology.
You should also have the skill to engage the audience. Your reviews should be entertaining and humorous enough so that the reader does not flip the page and the viewer could not think of reaching to the remote!
Where’s the job?
An individual with the above skill set can get a job as technology reviewer or product analyst or content writer or even an IT correspondent. The designation could be different depending on the organisation but the job is essentially the same.
Leading magazines, portals and media houses hire individuals to review the latest products that are launched in the market.
Rajiv Makhni and Vikram Chandra have been consistently producing shows like cell guru and gadget guru for NDTV. Leading English news channel CNN-IBN also has a gadget-based show called Tech Toyz.
What’s cool about the profession?
This is one job that will keep you on your toes every minute as technology keeps transforming at a lightning pace but the plus point is that you get to travel across the globe and keep abreast with latest in the world of technology. You also get a firsthand look at the latest products and your reviews influence buying decision of your readers/audience. You are supposed to come up with responsible reviews without any kind of bias towards any company or product.
