UPSC Full Form: UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission, which is known for recruitment for Group A services in India and positions offered after cracking the Civil Service Examination of UPSC are IAS, IPS, IFS, etc. UPSC is a constitutional body and one of the major examinations conducted by this body is the Civil Service Examination (CSE). Around 14 lakh people write the prelims exam, which is conducted annually for recruiting candidates for the top most positions.  

The UPSC CSE selection process has three rounds: a prelims exam, mains exam and an interview. Candidates who qualify for the preliminary round will be called to write the mains. The UPSC prelims examination acts as the screening test and the marks scored in this exam are not counted while preparing the final merit list.

Educational Qualification

To apply for the UPSC examination, a candidate must hold a graduate degree from any of the universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions. Candidates who are in their final year can apply for the posts to attempt the prelims examination. However, they have to submit their final qualification marks in the detailed application form (DAF) if selected for UPSC Mains.

Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications that are recognised by the government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees would also be eligible for admission to the Civil Services Examination.

Number of attempts for UPSC Exam

The candidate who is going to appear in the civil service examination will be permitted six (6) attempts. However, candidates in the SC, ST, OBC, and PwBD categories who fulfil the other eligibility requirements will be granted an exemption for the maximum number of attempts. The number of attempts that these candidates have in accordance with relaxation is as follows:

UPSC Salary Structure

The candidate selected through the UPSC exam will get the lucrative salary as per 7th pay commission. The UPSC salary is exclusive of any allowances—will be Rs 56,100. At pay level 18, the highest compensation for an IAS officer is Rs 2,50,000, which is for a cabinet secretary. Check the table below for post wise salary.
