What are JEE Main Marks?
JEE Main marks are the total scores a student gets in the JEE Main, conducted for admission to engineering colleges in India.
- For every correct answer, you get 4 marks.
- For every wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted as negative marking.
- No marks are given or deducted for unanswered questions.

The JEE Main 2025 exam will be administered in two sessions over five days, with two shifts per day, in January and April. It is possible that a given day's question paper will be easier or more challenging than others. Normalization is carried out in order to get past this potential equivalence in difficulty level. The normalized marks are a comparison score determined by NTA using a formula that was specifically created; they are not the candidate's real scores. Factors Determining JEE Main Marks vs Rank 2025
- Total Marks Scored
The total marks in JEE Main are calculated out of 300 (for B.E./B.Tech). The higher your marks, the better your rank. - Percentile Score
The National Testing Agency (NTA) calculates a percentile score for each candidate. The percentile indicates how many candidates scored below you in the exam. It is not the percentage of marks scored.
Example: If your percentile is 95, it means you scored better than 95% of the candidates. - Normalisation Process
JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts. To ensure fairness, the NTA uses a normalisation process to adjust the difficulty level of different shifts.

After normalisation, the NTA releases an All India Rank (AIR) based on the percentile score.

JEE Main Marks vs Rank
Here is the range of marks and their ranks based on the percentile. These are the approximated ranks based on a hypothetical scenario.

The above table cannot be followed blindly as the scenario cannot be so ideal. The below mentioned possibilities are there that might affect the ranking.
- Tie-Breaking Rules: If two candidates score the same percentile, the NTA considers marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry in order. If the tie persists, the age of the candidate and application number are used.
- Reservation: Reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC, EWS) have separate rank lists and cut-offs.

Marks in JEE Main represent the score you achieve based on the number of correct answers in the exam.
