JEE Main Marks vs Rank: The Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE Main) is one of the most famous competitive exams for engineering aspirants in India. Understanding how your marks make your rank is important for planning admissions to prestigious colleges. This article explains how JEE Main ranks are calculated based on marks and other parameters.

What are JEE Main Marks?
JEE Main marks are the total scores a student gets in the JEE Main, conducted for admission to engineering colleges in India.
- For every correct answer, you get 4 marks.
- For every wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted as negative marking.
- No marks are given or deducted for unanswered questions.
These marks are used to calculate your percentile score. The percentile helps determine your All India Rank (AIR). Higher marks mean a better percentile and a higher chance of getting into top engineering colleges like NITs, IIITs, and other reputed institutes.
What Is JEE Main Rank?
JEE Main Rank is the position you achieve among all the students who take this examination. It shows how well you performed compared to others. Your rank is based on your percentile score, not just your raw marks. The percentile score shows the percentage of students who scored below you in the exam. Your rank decides your admission to top engineering colleges like NITs, IIITs, and other government and private institutes.
How Are JEE Main Ranks Calculated?
The rank in JEE Main is not directly calculated based on marks alone. Several factors influence it. These factors directly impact your rank and the chances of getting admission to top engineering colleges.
Reason why JEE Main Result is announced in Percentile?
The JEE Main 2025 exam will be administered in two sessions over five days, with two shifts per day, in January and April. It is possible that a given day's question paper will be easier or more challenging than others. Normalization is carried out in order to get past this potential equivalence in difficulty level. The normalized marks are a comparison score determined by NTA using a formula that was specifically created; they are not the candidate's real scores. Based on past patterns and NTA's normalization formula, the range of JEE Mains scores versus percentile is displayed here.
Factors Determining JEE Main Marks vs Rank 2025
- Total Marks Scored
The total marks in JEE Main are calculated out of 300 (for B.E./B.Tech). The higher your marks, the better your rank. - Percentile Score
The National Testing Agency (NTA) calculates a percentile score for each candidate. The percentile indicates how many candidates scored below you in the exam. It is not the percentage of marks scored.
Example: If your percentile is 95, it means you scored better than 95% of the candidates. - Normalisation Process
JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts. To ensure fairness, the NTA uses a normalisation process to adjust the difficulty level of different shifts.
The percentile is calculated using the formula:
Percentile=(Number of candidates with marks less than or equal to yours/Total number of candidates)×100

After normalisation, the NTA releases an All India Rank (AIR) based on the percentile score.

JEE Main Marks vs Rank
Here is the range of marks and their ranks based on the percentile. These are the approximated ranks based on a hypothetical scenario.
Marks Range | Percentile | Rank Range |
280-300 | 99.9+ | Top 100 |
260-279 | 99.5-99.9 | 100-500 |
220-259 | 99-99.5 | 500-5,000 |
180-219 | 97-99 | 5,000-15,000 |
120-179 | 90-97 | 15,000-75,000 |
60-119 | 70-90 | 75,000-2,00,000 |
Below 60 | Below 70 | Above 2,00,000 |
The above table cannot be followed blindly as the scenario cannot be so ideal. The below mentioned possibilities are there that might affect the ranking.
- Tie-Breaking Rules: If two candidates score the same percentile, the NTA considers marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry in order. If the tie persists, the age of the candidate and application number are used.
- Reservation: Reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC, EWS) have separate rank lists and cut-offs.

What Is the Difference Between JEE Main Marks and Percentile?
Marks in JEE Main represent the score you achieve based on the number of correct answers in the exam. Each question has a specific value, and your total marks are calculated by adding the scores of your correct answers while deducting any negative marks for wrong ones. On the other hand, the percentile reflects your position compared to other students. It shows how many candidates scored below you in the exam. While marks indicate your individual performance, the percentile determines your relative rank among all test-takers and is crucial for admission decisions.
